FUTA Celebrates Guinness World Records-Holding Students Dunsin Dubem and Solomon Philip

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is celebrating the sporting achievements of two of its students, Dunsin Dubem and Solomon Philip, whose exceptional performances in rope skipping have earned them multiple Guinness World Records titles and recognition within Ondo State’s sporting community.

The two undergraduate students have distinguished themselves through speed, coordination, discipline, endurance and sustained commitment to competitive rope skipping while pursuing their academic programmes at FUTA.

Their achievements received further recognition on September 23, 2026, when both students were honoured by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, as part of its recognition of outstanding athletes in the state.

Dunsin Dubem, a student of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, began his rope-skipping journey in 2019 as a student of Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure. What began as an interest in the sport later developed into a competitive career featuring national participation and two Guinness World Records titles.

In 2021, Dunsin won a Silver Medal representing Oyemekun Grammar School at the National Inter-School Rope Skipping Championship in Akure, marking an early milestone in his athletic career.

He subsequently competed in the Nigerian Rope Skipping Introductory League in 2023 before making his mark internationally.

In 2023, Dunsin secured his first Guinness World Records title for Most Double Under Crossover Skips in 30 Seconds, recording 78 skips. In 2024, he followed it with a second Guinness World Records title for Most Double Under Crossover Skips in One Minute, recording 133 skips.

His sporting disciplines include speed skipping, double unders, crossover skipping, freestyle rope skipping and competitive rope skipping. Beyond competitions, he remains involved in athlete development, training and sports content creation.

On September 23, 2026, Dunsin was recognised by SWAN, Ondo State Chapter, as one of the 50 Icon Athletes in Sports in Ondo State, adding another milestone to his sporting career.

Solomon Philip also began his rope-skipping journey at Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, in 2021. He is currently studying Project Management Technology at FUTA.

His competitive career began with a Silver Medal at the National Inter-School Rope Skipping Championship in 2021. He later became Captain of the JC Club, leading the team at the first-ever Rope Skipping Introductory League in 2023, where the club finished second.

Solomon’s individual career has been marked by several Guinness World Records achievements involving different rope-skipping categories.

On January 24, 2023, he recorded 153 skips in 30 seconds on one foot in Akure, surpassing the previous record of 145 skips.

On August 18, 2023, he recorded 69 rope crossovers while skipping on one leg in 30 seconds. On the same date, he also recorded 62 rope crossovers while skipping on one leg in 30 seconds while blindfolded, equalling the then-record mark.

In September 2024, Solomon returned to improve his own one-foot skipping record, recording 158 skips in 30 seconds.

The achievements have brought international attention to Solomon’s performances and highlighted the potential of young Nigerian athletes to excel in specialised sporting disciplines.

His contribution also extends beyond individual records. Through his captaincy of the JC Club, Solomon has demonstrated leadership and team participation while contributing to the development of other athletes.

Like Dunsin, Solomon was recognised by SWAN, Ondo State Chapter, on September 23, 2026, in further recognition of his contribution to sports in Ondo State.

For FUTA, the achievements of the two students add to the university’s growing profile of students who distinguish themselves not only academically but also in sports, innovation, leadership and other areas of endeavour.
