A team of 500-level Mechanical Engineering students from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has secured a Top 10 position at the Siemens Immersive Design Challenge 2026, a global engineering competition organised by Siemens.

The FUTA team comprised:
- Ayodele Sileola
- Bounce Light
- Abe Enoch
- Adebanji Emmanuel
The students competed against about 200 university teams from different institutions across the world in the highly competitive challenge.
At the initial assessment stage, the competition was narrowed down to 54 teams, with FUTA emerging as the only Nigerian university team to qualify to that level.
The team maintained its strong performance throughout the semi-final rounds and eventually secured a place among the global Top 10 finalists.
Its project received a “Highly Commended Idea” certificate from the judging panel for its innovative and scalable approach to industrial waste heat management.

In addition, the team’s video presentation was also recognised among the Top 10 Video entries in the competition. The presentation was commended for its clarity and technical depth, particularly in demonstrating the use of advanced Siemens design and simulation tools in developing and refining a sustainable engineering solution.
The students carried out the project under the academic supervision of Dr. R.K. Apaolowo, whose guidance contributed significantly to the technical execution of the work.
Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, congratulated the students and described them as worthy ambassadors of the institution.
According to her, the accomplishment reflects the growing global relevance of FUTA and its commitment to producing highly competitive engineering graduates through innovation-driven and sustainability-focused research.
