The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has announced a vacancy for the position of Vice-Chancellor, following the impending expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor.

In a notice issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, the University invited applications from suitably qualified and distinguished academics, in accordance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, as amended.

Founded in 1980, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, is one of Nigeria’s foremost federal universities of technology, with a mandate focused on excellence in teaching, research, and the advancement of technological innovation for national development.

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University and is responsible to the University Council and Senate for the day-to-day administration of the institution, as well as the implementation of its academic and administrative policies.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants for the position must:

  • Be a distinguished Professor of high academic standing with a strong record of teaching, research, and community service.
  • Possess a Ph.D. degree from a recognised university.
  • Have a minimum of ten (10) years post-professorial experience in a university or comparable institution.
  • Demonstrate proven administrative and leadership capacity, including experience in university management.
  • Be a person of integrity, with sound moral character and good physical and mental health.
  • Show the ability to attract research grants and foster local and international collaborations.
  • Possess the vision and capacity to provide effective leadership and promote harmony among staff and students.
  • Not be more than sixty-five (65) years of age at the time of assuming office.

Tenure and Conditions of Service

The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a single term of five (5) years only. Conditions of service shall be as applicable to Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities and as determined by the Federal Government and the Governing Council of the University.

Method of Application

Interested and qualified candidates are required to:

  • Submit twenty (20) copies of a formal application, accompanied by a detailed Curriculum Vitae.
  • Provide a statement of vision and mission for the University, not exceeding 1,000 words.
  • Include the names and addresses of three referees, who are to forward confidential reports directly to the Registrar.
