On Monday, 23rd February 2026, the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) celebrated a major infrastructural milestone with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art gymnasium by the Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey.

On Monday, 23rd February 2026, the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) celebrated a major infrastructural milestone with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art gymnasium by the Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey.

The facility, dedicated to the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, marks a significant step in enhancing student development, vocational training, and campus well-being.

The commissioning event included a facility inspection of key university departments, including the Central Store and the Department of Visual Arts Technology, highlighting ongoing developments under the administration of Vice-Chancellor Professor Francisca Bassey.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner praised the university leadership for innovation, accountability, and prudent resource utilization. He noted that this commissioning represents his first official project inauguration at the university since assuming office and underscored the government’s commitment to supporting institutions demonstrating measurable progress.

Professor Bassey welcomed the recognition, describing the gymnasium project as a repurposing of a cafeteria building abandoned for over 40 years, and credited the Acting Head of Department, Dr. David Eyam, along with staff and students, for the successful execution. She emphasized that the facility aligns with global tertiary education standards and will significantly boost student fitness, practical training, and campus engagement.

The ceremony was attended by Professor Stella Maris-Okey (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic), Professor Thomas Ojikpong (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration), Dr. Catherine Osai (Registrar), Dr. Victoria Iyishu (Librarian), Mr. Wilson Aniyom (Bursar), Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, staff, and students. Representatives from the Ministry of Education, including Dr. Moses Agboreyo, Mrs. Theresa Inaku, Mr. Cyril Itam, and Mr. Asuquo Etim Amaku, accompanied the Commissioner during the visit.

The project highlights UNICROSS’s commitment to revitalizing infrastructure and improving the holistic development of students, reinforcing the institution’s upward trajectory under Professor Bassey’s leadership.
