Students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) have been kidnapped by suspected gunmen from their off-campus residence in Lafia, Nasarawa State, raising fresh concerns over the safety of students living outside the university campus.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Sure Leaders Lodge, located in the Bukan Kwato area of Lafia.
According to a student who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, the victims are all 100-level students of the institution. The assailants reportedly stormed the lodge and abducted the students before fleeing the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nasarawa State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the kidnapping or any rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, the Students' Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University of Lafia has confirmed the incident in a public safety notice issued on Sunday.
In the statement jointly signed by SUG President, Jabir Ibrahim, and Secretary-General, Ibrahim Aliyu, the union disclosed that it had commenced discussions with traditional authorities and the university management to strengthen security and facilitate efforts toward the safe return of the abducted students.
"The Students' Union leadership has met with the District Head and relevant authorities and is collaborating with the University Management on security measures," the statement read.
The union also appealed to students to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while security agencies and relevant stakeholders continue efforts to address the situation.
The latest abduction adds to growing concerns about the security of students residing in off-campus accommodations across parts of Nigeria, where incidents of kidnapping have become an increasing threat.
Members of the university community are hopeful that the victims will be rescued safely as authorities intensify efforts to secure their release.
