History Made as Prince Yemisi Shyllon Unveils Iconic Bronze Statue of Chief Obafemi Awolowo at OAU

In a momentous celebration of legacy and education, renowned art patron Prince Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon officially unveiled a larger-than-life-size bronze statue of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on December 5, 2025. 

The donation serves as a permanent tribute to Chief Awolowo, widely regarded as the architect of free education in South-West Nigeria and the visionary after whom the institution is named.

A Monument to Excellence

The ceremony brought together a distinguished assembly of academic and political leaders. Joining Prince Shyllon for the unveiling were:

The OAU Administration: Led by the Vice-Chancellor, along with all Deans and Heads of Departments.

The Awolowo Family: Represented at the event to witness the honoring of their patriarch.

Dignitaries: Including Senator Babafemi Ojudu, alongside a massive turnout of university staff and students.

Artistic Patronage and Cultural Heritage

Prince Yemisi Shyllon, one of Africa’s most prominent art collectors, noted that the statue is more than just a piece of art; it is a symbol of the enduring power of education and leadership. The bronze monument is strategically positioned to inspire future generations of "Great Ife" students to emulate the discipline and intellectual rigor of the late Premier. 

The Vice-Chancellor commended Prince Shyllon for his consistent philanthropy and his role in preserving Nigeria’s cultural and political history through high-value artistic contributions.
