IBBUL Appoints Dr. Lami Akawu as First Female Principal Officer
Dr. Lami Akawu has been officially appointed as the Librarian of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, becoming the Institution’s first female Principal Officer, a development widely described as historic for the University.
The appointment letter was presented by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, during a brief ceremony held in his office.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that her appointment reflects the University’s commitment to merit, experience, expertise and institutional continuity.
He expressed confidence that her leadership would strengthen library services, expand access to academic resources, and enhance research support and productivity across the University and its Faculties.
Dr. Akawu was born in Kaffin Koro, in Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State. She began her early education at Waziri Primary School, Minna, before proceeding to Women Teachers’ College, Minna for her secondary studies.
She later attended the Niger State College of Education, after which she gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she obtained her Bachelor and Master of Library Science degrees in 2002 and 2012 respectively.
In further pursuit of academic specialization, she earned her PhD in Library and Information Science from Federal University of Technology, Minna in 2023.
As one of the pioneer staff of the University, Dr. Akawu has built a reputation for dedication, professionalism, and commitment to academic development.
Her appointment is seen by many within the academic community as both a reward for long-standing service and a strategic step toward modernizing library operations in line with global standards.
In her response, Dr. Akawu expressed appreciation to the University Management for the trust placed in her and pledged to prioritize digital transformation, improved access to scholarly resources, and stronger research support for staff and students.
