Kaduna State University Hosts 46th Annual Microbiology Conference on Nigeria’s Economic and Security Challenges

Kaduna State University (KASU) hosted the 46th Annual Scientific Conference and General Meeting of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM) from October 29 to 31, with the theme “Microbiology, Microbes, and Bioeconomy as Solutions to Nigeria's Economic and Security Challenges.” The conference brought together experts to explore how microbiology can address national issues.
Dr. Jonathan Maiangwa, Chair of the Local Organising Committee, emphasized the role of microbiology in advancing food security, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. NSM National President Prof. Victor Oluoha Nwaugo called for government recognition of microbiology as a solution for national challenges.
KASU Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa highlighted the university’s commitment to research in food security and community engagement. Keynote speaker Prof. Fatimah Tahir of Sa’adu Zungur University underscored the role of microbes in economic diversification and environmental sustainability.
The event featured cultural performances and an educational drama by KASU’s Mal. Hamza Idris on microbes’ importance in daily life. Dr. Idris Abdulrrahman, Head of KASU’s Microbiology Department, closed the conference by calling for increased collaboration in the field.
