Lagos State University Students’ Union Election Records Breakthrough With E-Voting Innovation

The Lagos State University (LASU) has successfully conducted its 37th Students’ Union general election for the 2026/2027 academic session, with over 6,500 students participating through an electronic voting system in a process widely described as transparent, credible and technologically advanced.

The election, held across all campuses of the university, marked a significant shift in student electoral administration, as LASU deployed a fully digital e-voting platform that allowed students to elect their leaders seamlessly.

At the end of the exercise, Rufai Akanni OBIPEHIN emerged as the 37th President of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), while Hon. Abdulrahman Temidayo IMAM was elected as the 37th Speaker of the Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC).

The electoral process was supervised through a coordinated framework involving the university management, the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), the Students’ Affairs Division, the University Security Unit, the Centre for Information and Public Relations, and the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) of LASUSU led by Honourable Theresa Tobiloba GABRIEL.

The election concluded at about 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2026, with results formally announced amid widespread excitement across the university community. The exercise also continued with faculty, school, college and departmental elections, which ran through to Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, praised the innovation behind the process, describing the e-voting system as a major advancement in institutional electoral practice and a model that could be replicated in wider national elections.

He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, for providing leadership that enabled the successful adoption of technology-driven governance systems within the university.

Prof. Enikuomehin also acknowledged the efforts of staff and student stakeholders who ensured the smooth execution of the election, noting the professionalism and coordination displayed throughout the process.

He further commended the Independent Electoral Committee for what he described as discipline, transparency and organisational competence in delivering a credible election for the student body.

A notable highlight of the election was the emergence of Honourable Theresa Tobiloba GABRIEL as the first female Chairperson of the LASU Students’ Union Independent Electoral Committee (LASUSUIEC), marking a historic milestone in the university’s electoral history.

The election cycle officially commenced on Saturday, May 23, 2026, with the Students’ Parliamentary Council elections and concluded with subsequent elections at faculty and departmental levels.

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated all contestants and stakeholders for the successful conduct of the exercise, describing it as a demonstration of LASU’s commitment to innovation, inclusion and institutional excellence.
