The University of Ibadan (UI) has formalised its longstanding collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at strengthening research, innovation and capacity development in agriculture and related fields.

The agreement, which consolidates years of informal engagement between both institutions, is expected to provide a structured framework for deeper collaboration in research, resource mobilisation and human capital development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, said the MoU marks a strategic step toward institutionalising existing partnerships that have evolved over time through student research activities, staff exchanges and shared use of research facilities.
He noted that the formalisation would enhance monitoring, coordination and expansion of collaborative efforts between both institutions.
According to him, the agreement was developed through joint committees from UI and IITA, with significant contributions from the Deans of the Faculties of Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources.
Prof. Adebowale expressed confidence that, given the multidisciplinary nature of the university, the partnership would deepen collaboration in agricultural research, food security, technology development and extension services.

He stressed the need for scientific research to move beyond theory into practical solutions capable of improving agricultural productivity and supporting farmers across Nigeria.
He added that the collaboration would also open opportunities for early-career researchers to participate in joint projects, access competitive research funding and contribute to innovation-driven solutions in the agricultural sector.
The Vice-Chancellor further described the MoU as a framework that would strengthen institutional synergy and deliver long-term benefits to both organisations.
In his remarks, the Deputy Director-General, Partnerships for Delivery and Scaling at IITA, Dr. Tahirou Abdoulaye, said the agreement aligns with the institute’s strategy of consolidating partnerships under a unified institutional structure rather than fragmented engagements.
He explained that the MoU would enhance joint research, resource mobilisation and the generation of impactful outcomes for agriculture in Nigeria and globally.
Dr. Abdoulaye also noted that IITA currently hosts several UI researchers, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students, and expressed optimism that the formal agreement would expand such opportunities further.

He described the partnership as a milestone achievement that would improve coordination, strengthen capacity development initiatives and enable proper tracking of research progress for mutual benefit.
