Lagos State University (LASU) has taken another step towards improving its power supply infrastructure following the official handover of a 10MW Mini Solar Grid Project by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The handover ceremony was held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the project site between the Lagos State University International School (LASUIS) and the Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) on the university’s Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.

The event was witnessed by the University Management Team, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, FCASSON, FAPROCON, MNAE, as well as representatives of TETFund, Ammah Contractors Limited and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Badejo described the project as a strategic investment with implications for academic activities, research, innovation, digital transformation, staff productivity and student experience.

She said the project could also serve as a practical platform for renewable energy research, interdisciplinary innovation, technical training, internships and industry partnerships, particularly in solar technology, energy storage, smart-grid management, artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to TETFund and assured stakeholders of the university’s cooperation and commitment to quality, safety, sustainability and compliance with approved specifications and timelines.

She expressed optimism that the project would become a lasting platform for innovation and sustainable development at LASU.

Earlier, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics and Director, Special Interventions, Professor Oseni Afisi, FSPSP, M.CloD, described the project as a significant milestone for the university.

He acknowledged the assessments and consultations carried out by TETFund, project consultants and Ammah Contractors Limited before the project’s commencement.

Professor Afisi also commended the Directorate of Works and Physical Planning, particularly the Electrical Unit and the Master Plan team, for identifying suitable locations and addressing the technical requirements for the project.

He emphasised the importance of reliable electricity to teaching, learning, research and overall institutional productivity, while appreciating TETFund for its continued support.

Representing the Executive Secretary of TETFund, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Arch. Babatunde Olajide, said the project forms part of the Fund’s strategic intervention to address electricity supply challenges in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

According to him, LASU was selected under Lot 6 of the 2025 intervention cycle to provide reliable electricity to critical facilities, including:

  • Administrative offices
  • ICT centres
  • Laboratories
  • Libraries
  • Health facilities

Arch. Olajide said the project was expected to reduce the university’s dependence on the national grid and diesel generators, lower operational costs and contribute to a more sustainable energy profile.

He further explained that the project would feature:

  • Solar photovoltaic panels
  • Battery energy storage
  • Power-conversion systems
  • Distribution and protection infrastructure
  • Monitoring and energy-management systems

He urged the relevant parties to maintain strict compliance with the approved designs, specifications and Bill of Quantities (BOQ), while reaffirming TETFund’s commitment to the successful delivery of the project.

Representing the Managing Director of Ammah Contractors Limited, the company’s Director of Renewable Energy, Engr. Muhammad Abdullahi, appreciated TETFund for awarding the project to the company and commended the university management for its cooperation.

He assured LASU that the project, designed to meet the university’s present and future energy needs, would be delivered within the stipulated 12-month period and in accordance with required standards for quality, safety, reliability and durability.

Engr. Abdullahi also pledged that the company would train the university’s technical personnel in the operation and maintenance of the solar photovoltaic and battery energy-storage systems to support the long-term sustainability of the project.

The formal handover involved the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, handing over the project site to the TETFund representative, who subsequently transferred it to Ammah Contractors Limited for execution, marking the commencement of the project.

The Registrar, Mr Emmanuel Fanu, represented by the Senior Deputy Registrar, Academic Staff Establishment (ASE), Mr Abdulhamed Lawal, delivered the vote of thanks.

He appreciated TETFund, the university management and other stakeholders for their contributions and reaffirmed LASU’s commitment to the successful implementation of the project.

The 10MW Mini Solar Grid Project is expected to complement LASU’s existing power sources and improve the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply for teaching, learning, research and other essential activities across the university.
