LASUCOM Holds Safety and Vigilance Workshop for Security Personnel

The Security Unit of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, LASUCOM, has kicked off a two-day training programme for its personnel, themed "Professionalism, Vigilance and Safety in Tertiary Institutions." The workshop commenced on Friday, 11th September 2026.

The training is aimed at strengthening the capacity of security personnel and equipping them with practical knowledge and skills required to effectively respond to security and safety situations within the College.

In his remarks to formally declare the training open, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, reminded the officers that they occupy a critical position in the daily life of the institution, often serving as the first point of contact in situations requiring vigilance, sound judgement and a prompt response.

He stressed that the changing nature of security demands continuous learning and professional development, urging the personnel to approach the training not merely as a routine exercise but as an opportunity to sharpen their skills and strengthen their readiness for duty.

"Security is not simply about standing at a gate or watching over a facility but also about vigilance, discipline, judgement and the ability to respond appropriately when it matters most," he said.

The programme covers key areas including access control and surveillance, emergency response and fire safety, customer service and conflict resolution, report writing, CCTV surveillance, observation and vigilance, as well as supervisory and leadership skills.

Goodwill messages from the College Secretary, Ms. Ayomipo Fagbenro, and Financial Controller, Dr. (Mrs.) Oyende, also echoed the Provost's sentiment on the responsibilities of the Security Unit reaching beyond the conventional task of guarding facilities, describing them as an essential part of the College’s wider duty-of-care system.

The sessions are expected to focus on broad areas of security and safety such as access control, emergency response, fire safety, customer service, conflict resolution, investigations, report writing, CCTV surveillance, observation, supervisory and leadership skills.

The programme is scheduled to end on Saturday, 12th September 2026, as part of efforts to promote a more professional, vigilant and effective approach to security and safety within the College.

Through this yearly capacity-building initiative, LASUCOM continues to demonstrate its steadfast resolve to maintaining a safe and conducive teaching, learning, working and visiting environment for staff, students and visitors in the College.
