LASU’s Prof. Tunji Azeez Emerges 11th President Of Society Of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA)
Professor Tunji Azeez, Acting Dean of the School of Creativity, Culture, and Tourism Studies at Lagos State University (LASU), has been elected as the 11th President of the Society of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA).
Professor Tunji Azeez, Acting Dean of the School of Creativity, Culture, and Tourism Studies at Lagos State University (LASU), has been elected as the 11th President of the Society of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA).
His election took place during the 38th SONTA International Conference and 39th Annual General Meeting, hosted by LASU.
In his acceptance remarks, Prof. Azeez pledged to provide purposeful and service-driven leadership. He stated, “I pledge that I will, by the grace of Almighty Allah, take the society to greater heights. Leadership is about service and sacrifice, and that’s what we’ll do — serve and make sacrifices for a better and greater SONTA.”

A distinguished scholar and administrator, Prof. Azeez has made outstanding contributions to theatre studies, cultural scholarship, and creative practice over the years. His election as President is widely regarded as a recognition of his dedication to advancing theatre and performance studies in Nigeria and his longstanding service to SONTA.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, congratulated him on his achievement, noting that it reflects the University’s tradition of excellence. She expressed confidence that his leadership of SONTA would further elevate the society and bring greater recognition to LASU.
