Professor of Architecture at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Professor Oluwole Oluwaseun Ajayi, has called on the Federal Government and the general public to amplify awareness on health and safety in the nation’s construction sector.
Ajayi raised this concern while delivering the 67th Inaugural Lecture of the University titled: “Architecture and Construction Ergonomics’ Poor Cousin: The Neglected in Physical Construction Services.”
He urged the government to create an enabling environment for the implementation of health and safety policies regarding the wellbeing of the construction industry.
The Professor canvassed for a holistic approach that integrates work organisation and physical environment with pre-planning of health and safety at construction operation sites in order to achieve optimum ergonomics.

Ajayi also recommended other health and safety measures to tackle hazards in construction work, stressing that stakeholders and government should insist on safe work practices in site operations. He further noted that the construction process should be re-engineered to improve activities that sustain the health and safety of workers during and after daily operations.
He additionally called for the adoption of new technologies, such as prefabricated modules, which reduce workers’ exposure to musculoskeletal injuries.
