The Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology at Lead City University hosted the Vox Up Intervarsity Debate Competition on April 8, 2026, bringing together leading undergraduate voices in Mass Communication from across Southwest Nigeria in a high-stakes intellectual showcase.

The competition attracted participation from 10 universities, creating a competitive academic environment defined by structured argumentation, media critique, and policy-driven discourse. Participating institutions included Lead City University, Redeemer’s University, Babcock University, Dominion University, Pan-Atlantic University, Precious Cornerstone University, and Kola Daisi University, among others, all contributing to a rigorous exchange of ideas on the role of media in contemporary society.

The opening session featured a keynote address delivered by Mrs. Aboyede Ojo, Director of Digital Communication, representing the Commissioner for Information, Oyo State. She underscored the ethical and professional responsibilities of media practitioners, stressing that communication extends beyond expression to agenda-setting, narrative construction, and public perception management. She urged students to prioritise credibility, ethical standards, and leadership readiness as future stakeholders in the media ecosystem.

After multiple rounds of debate, four institutions advanced to the final stage: Lead City University, Precious Cornerstone University, Redeemer’s University, and Kola Daisi University. The final round delivered intense exchanges, with teams presenting structured, evidence-based arguments on topical media and societal issues.

At the conclusion of the competition, Lead City University emerged winner of the contest, securing the ₦200,000 grand prize. Redeemer’s University finished in second place with ₦150,000, while Precious Cornerstone University placed third, earning ₦100,000.

The event was formally concluded with remarks from Dr. Amedu Anthony, who commended the participants for their intellectual depth, confidence, and composure throughout the competition. He noted the importance of platforms such as Vox Up in developing future media professionals and highlighted the increasing relevance of artificial intelligence in shaping modern communication practice.

The Vox Up Intervarsity Debate Competition reinforced its position as a key academic platform for nurturing critical thinking, rhetorical excellence, and professional readiness among emerging media practitioners in Nigeria.
