Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has secured first place at the Russian-African Forum-Contest of Young Scientists, held from October 12 to 17, 2026, under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The achievement highlights the university’s growing research capacity and its commitment to academic excellence, innovation and international collaboration under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman.
Representing Nigeria at the international competition, the NSUK team won the gold award and Diploma of the First Degree in the Oil and Gas Engineering category for its project titled “Fabrication of Oil and Gas Extractor for Coal and Oil Shale.”
The competition was held under the theme, “Future Engineers of the World Are the Foundation of Sustainable Development.”
The award-winning project proposes an innovative modular system for extracting liquid, gaseous and solid products from coal and oil shale, with potential applications in Nigeria’s energy and industrial sectors.
The technology also incorporates carbon dioxide capture and handling for possible industrial applications.
Potential sources of raw materials for the proposed project include coal deposits in Obi-Lafia and oil shale in Lokpanta. However, further geological, technical and environmental assessments are required to establish their suitability and commercial viability.
The NSUK delegation was led by Dr. Jerry Danwazan, who served as Team Captain. Other members of the team included:
- Mr. Modibbo Abdullahi Mahmud.
- Mrs. Mamidak Miner Iliya.
- Hon. Ajegena Ibrahim Olege, Esq.
