Nigerian-American Poet Daniel Umemezie Makes History as 2026–2027 Youth Poet Laureate

Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026–2027 US National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th recipient and second Nigerian-American to hold the title.

The United States Mission Nigeria announced Umemezie’s selection on Friday, describing the young poet as a gifted Nigerian-American voice whose work explores heritage, identity and the complexities of growing up between different cultural worlds.

The recognition places Umemezie among a distinguished group of young literary voices in the United States and provides him with a national platform to use poetry and storytelling to engage wider audiences.

According to the United States Mission Nigeria, Umemezie’s poetry reflects the richness of his experiences as a Nigerian-American while examining questions surrounding culture, identity and belonging.

His work connects personal experiences with broader questions about what it means to grow up between different cultural environments.

The Mission described him as a poet whose writing captures the complexity of his experiences and bridges heritage, identity and the Nigerian-American experience.

Umemezie’s achievement has consequently drawn attention to the role of young writers in using literature to explore cultural identity and create conversations across communities.

Umemezie follows in the footsteps of Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to be named US National Youth Poet Laureate in 2023.

His appointment therefore represents another significant milestone for Nigerian-American representation within the American literary community.

The National Youth Poet Laureate programme recognises outstanding young poets in the United States and provides recipients with opportunities to reach wider audiences through their literary work.

Umemezie is expected to use the platform to continue developing his poetry while engaging with young people and wider communities through creative expression.
