No Grace Without Disgrace, How UDUS Alumnus Secures a Master's Degree Scholarship at UEST, China

From the street of struggle to the University of Electronic Science and Technology, China. Akinteye Hammed Yusuf’s journey has begun at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, where he is now pursuing master’s degree with a major research focus on Digital and Globalization Governance under School of Public Administration (SPA). He is a graduate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, with a first-class honour in the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences. 

Akinteye Hammed, popularly known as Broda Shaggy expressed his delight at the moment he won the fully funded scholarship as a testament to keep striving for excellence while he praised God for his countless blessings upon him.

In his words: ”Alhamdulillah, all praises to Allah who made everything possible. It was not an easy task, but with Allah’s help and with the support of my mentor, Azeez Abiola Azeez, who always believed in me and motivated me– we made it. This scholarship is a blessing, a testament to Allah’s mercy, and a motivation to continue striving for excellence.”

Reflecting on the admission process, he recounted the challenges faced, which served as a source of motivation in pursuing his lifelong goal.

 

“The process was filled with numerous challenges—financial hardships, emotional stress, trial and error, rejection, and many obstacles. It was a tough journey, but perseverance and faith kept me going. Despite the difficulties, I remained focused and committed, and Allah’s guidance led me through.”he said

UDUS Prepared Me for Greatness

He opined that the beautiful thing about studying at UDUS is that it infuses resilience in its students.

“The university’s standards are exceptionally high—beyond our expectations. Our university’s reputation and rigorous academic environment greatly supported me throughout this process. It truly prepared students to compete and succeed on an international level,”he said.

Hammed’s chances of winning the scholarship were slim as he was uncertain of being admitted for the highly competitive the scholarship is.

“Honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure I would be chosen. But I prayed and trusted Allah’s plan. I believe Allah used this opportunity to crown my mother’s efforts—may she live long for me—and to honour the memory of my father, may his soul rest in peace in Jannah. It’s a divine blessing that I cherish deeply.”

My application number was 2,079– the process was rigorous

He continues by saying the application was a rigorous one indeed which started from Nov, 2024 to June, 2025. 

“The process was rigorous—starting from November 2024 with application submissions, review in February 2025, interviews from March to April 2025, and the final admission in June 2025. It involved intense interviews, financial strain, and emotional stress.”

“This was not my first attempt. In Nigeria and abroad, for this  scholarship, I competed with over 4,560 applicants, with my application number being 2,079,” he added.

I spent all my life savings– says Hammed 

Reckoning on the challenges he faced which brought him shame and embarrassment while pursuing the process. He never stopped and kept pushing.

“I faced many challenges. I spent all my life savings, lost everything, and even faced shame and embarrassment, which sometimes made me consider giving up. Some students even thought I was spilling or failing, but I remained resilient. Despite the hardships, I kept faith and pushed forward”

He appreciates everyone who supports him, including the Deputy Dean; Dr Tukur, his HOD; Professor M.A Umar and all the lecturers in the Department of Public Administration, friends and family members for the unrelenting efforts.

He further encouraged students to keep a strong academic foundation and keep pursue opportunities that align with the goals 

“Never give up. Success comes with perseverance and hard work. Keep pushing forward, and don’t be discouraged by shame or setbacks. As I always say, “No grace without disgrace.” Stay focused and trust that your efforts will pay off,” he advised. 

About The Scholarship 

The scholarship is fully funded by the University of Electronic Science and Technology, China. It covers medical insurance, accommodation in the dormitory, and a living stipend that relieves financial burden and allows students to focus squarely on their studies.
