NYSC Director-General Appeals to Katsina Government for Monthly Corps Members’ Allowance

NYSC DG Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has urged the Katsina State Government to introduce a monthly allowance for Corps Members serving across the state.

Nafiu made the appeal on Wednesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Radda, at the Government House, Katsina, during his nationwide tour of NYSC orientation camps for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course.

The NYSC boss also urged the state government to strengthen its overall support for the Scheme, noting that the Federal, state and local governments have specific responsibilities under the NYSC Act towards its effective operation.

He commended the Katsina State Government for its support, particularly the renovation of the state’s permanent NYSC orientation camp and the augmentation of feeding for Corps Members during the ongoing orientation exercise.

Nafiu also acknowledged Governor Radda’s plan to renovate the camp’s hostel facilities, urging the government to consider extending its support by providing a monthly allowance for Corps Members serving in the state.

He described the relationship between Corps Members and the communities they serve as mutually beneficial, noting that their contributions to national development extend across critical sectors, including healthcare, education and legal services.

According to him, Corps Members serving as teachers, medical personnel, lawyers and in other professional capacities make significant contributions to communities across Nigeria.

He said the value of these services would become more evident if their contributions were quantified financially, adding that their work continues to support Nigeria’s development while advancing the NYSC’s objective of promoting national unity.

Responding, Governor Radda described the NYSC as one of Nigeria’s oldest government programmes and said it remained relevant as an instrument of national integration and development.

The governor commended Corps Members for their commitment and sacrifices, particularly those serving in rural communities across the state.

Radda, however, called on the NYSC to deploy more Corps Members to Katsina to address manpower shortages in critical sectors.

He specifically requested additional Mathematics and English Language teachers, as well as medical personnel, to strengthen services in the state.

While acknowledging the competing demands on the state’s resources, the governor assured the NYSC management that the immediate needs of the Scheme would be considered.

He also cited the planned renovation of the orientation camp hostels as part of the state’s commitment to improving facilities for Corps Members.

Radda subsequently directed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, who also serves as Chairman of the Katsina State NYSC Governing Board, to make appropriate budgetary provisions for the needs of the Scheme.

Nafiu’s visit was part of his ongoing inspection of NYSC orientation camps nationwide to monitor the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course and assess the welfare and operational needs of Corps Members.
