Lagos State University (LASU) has continued to garner praise for its remarkable transformation under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM. The latest commendation came from a group of former students' union leaders and progressives who visited the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at her office in the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building.
The delegation, comprising past student leaders from 2003 to the present, lauded Prof. Olatunji-Bello’s leadership for significantly elevating the university’s status. Speaking on behalf of the group, Comrade Dr. Adebowale Oshineye, a former Speaker of the LASU Students’ Parliamentary Council, praised the Vice-Chancellor’s ability to effectively manage diverse interests within the university.
"You have transformed our university from what it was in our time to a globally recognized institution today. The progress is almost beyond belief. Your intellectual prowess demonstrates that we only have two higher institutions—LASU and others," he said.
He further highlighted her remarkable contributions across all areas of the university’s development, emphasizing her role in LASU’s history.
Also speaking, Comrade Omisore Michael, the 16th President of LASUSU, emphasized that the visit was a show of support and appreciation for the Vice-Chancellor's outstanding work.
Additionally, Comrade Ayodele Olabiwonninu, Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja Branch) and former union executive, led the group in presenting a plaque to Prof. Olatunji-Bello in recognition of her transformative leadership and the progress seen at LASU.
The accolades were rounded off by Comrade Ayodele Olatunde, Convener of the group and the 16th Speaker of the Students’ Parliamentary Council, who reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the Vice-Chancellor’s administration.
In response, Prof. Olatunji-Bello attributed her achievements to divine guidance and the unwavering support of the university community.
"Our achievements are a gift from God; there's nothing extraordinary about it. When you have God on your side, you can achieve anything. I am blessed with both God’s favour and the support of the university community, and together, we succeed," she said.
She expressed gratitude to the visiting group and encouraged them to uphold leadership values in their respective endeavors.
"You have witnessed the challenges of LASU, you are now witnessing its transformation, and I believe you will see it when LASU reaches its peak. Learn from the past and from those who have led before you. It is through learning from their successes and mistakes that you will become successful leaders," she advised.
The visit was attended by senior university officials, including the University Librarian, Dr. Omawunmi Makinde, and the Director of ICT, Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, among others.
