A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Adeyemi Olaide Oginni, has been awarded the prestigious African Engineering and Technology Network (AFRETEC) Staff Mobility Grant for her groundbreaking research on artificial intelligence (AI) and its role in addressing solid waste management (SWM) challenges in emerging societies.

Dr. Oginni’s research, titled Artificial Intelligence and the Challenges and Opportunities in Addressing Solid Waste Management in Emerging Societies: A Cross-Country Study of Kigali and Lagos, aims to explore how AI can revolutionize waste management practices in rapidly growing urban centers. Through the AFRETEC grant, she will collaborate with Dr. Pierre Bakunzibake, the Project Lead for the University of Rwanda (UR) AFRETEC Project, over a three-month research period.

The AFRETEC research grant, a transformative initiative of Carnegie Mellon University, Africa (CMU-Africa), fosters pan-African collaboration among technology-focused universities to drive inclusive digital growth. It promotes joint teaching, knowledge creation, and entrepreneurship within the engineering and technology sectors.

Dr. Oginni, a distinguished academic and researcher at UNILAG, specializes in climate studies and institutional architecture. She is widely recognized for her mentorship of young female students in STEM fields, particularly through her participation in Soapbox STEM in 2020 and 2022.
