The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, Prof. Umaru A. Pate, has called on Nigerian leaders and citizens to prioritize inclusive communication, responsible leadership, and transparent governance as essential prerequisites for building lasting peace and national unity.
Prof. Umaru A. Pate stated this while delivering the 29th and 30th Combined Convocation Lecture at the Main Hall of the College of Medical Sciences, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, emphasizing that Nigeria's persistent challenges of insecurity, social fragmentation, and governance deficits reflect a profound crisis of trust among citizens, institutions, and communities.
Speaking on the theme "Building Trust Amidst Conflict: Communication, Leadership, and the Promise of Peaceful Coexistence in Nigeria," Prof. Pate analyzed how exclusionary narratives, misinformation, weak dialogue, and ethical lapses in leadership have deepened mistrust and undermined peaceful coexistence in the country.
The renowned media and communication expert advocated for inclusive communication, responsible media engagement, transparent governance, and values-driven leadership as essential tools for restoring confidence, strengthening social cohesion, and managing diversity constructively.
Prof. Umaru Pate highlighted the strategic role of universities, especially Modibbo Adama University, Yola, under the leadership of Prof. Ibrahim Umar, in generating knowledge, shaping civic values, and nurturing ethical leaders who can steer the nation toward positive transformation.

The lecture was well-attended by Her Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Prof. Keletapwa Farauta, Pro-Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, Principal Officers, Professors, Senate members, staff members, students, and members of the university community, among other dignitaries in Adamawa State and beyond.
Prof. Umaru A. Pate was presented with a plaque by the Vice Chancellor, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to national discourse, remarkable achievements in media scholarship, public service, and academic leadership.
The occasion ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Abraham Okolo, the Chairman Lecture and Award of Prizes Committee (LAPC), who commended Prof. Pate for his incisive analysis and timely intervention on critical national issues.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Umar, specially thanked all dignitaries, guests, and participants for gracing the occasion with their presence.
