Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi Appointed New University Of Abuja Vice Chancellor

The University of Abuja Governing Council, chaired by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has appointed Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi as the new substantive Vice-Chancellor, effective February 10, 2026, for a five-year non-renewable tenure.

The announcement followed the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on November 7, 2025.

Professor Fawehinmi, currently Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, Abia State, is a renowned Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology. He brings extensive experience in academic leadership, having held roles such as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Port Harcourt, Head of Department, Dean, and Associate Dean.

The Council also approved the tenure extension of Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Matthew Adamu until February 10, 2026.

Professor Fawehinmi is recognized for his contributions to academia, with over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and participation in numerous international conferences. He is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria. His appointment underscores his readiness to lead a vibrant academic community, leveraging his administrative expertise and scholarly achievements.
