Professor Usunobun Delivers Edo State University’s 18th Inaugural Lecture

Professor Usunomena Usunobun, a Professor of Environmental and Biochemical Toxicology at Edo State University, Iyamho, has delivered the institution’s 18th Inaugural Lecture, highlighting the importance of indigenous medicinal plants and scientific research in addressing health challenges.

The lecture, held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, was titled “Back to Our Roots: The Panacea to Insults and Assaults.”

During the presentation, Professor Usunobun examined the effects of environmental and biochemical toxins on human health while exploring the potential of Nigeria’s indigenous medicinal plants and leafy vegetables in disease prevention and health promotion.

The professor presented findings from his research on several medicinal plants, including bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), Annona muricata, Chromolaena odorata, Jatropha tanjorensis and Rhaphiostylis beninensis.

He highlighted the antioxidant and protective properties of these plants, noting their potential role in reducing certain toxic-induced injuries and supporting human health.

Professor Usunobun called for increased investment in research focused on Nigeria’s medicinal plant resources, greater consumption of nutritious indigenous vegetables, responsible harvesting and utilisation of medicinal plants, and stronger collaboration between regulatory agencies and higher institutions.

He emphasised that combining traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches would help unlock the potential of Nigeria’s rich biodiversity for sustainable healthcare solutions and development.

The inaugural lecture further underscored Edo State University, Iyamho’s commitment to promoting impactful research, knowledge exchange and innovation across various fields of study.
