RSU Deploys Advanced ML/AI Research Platform To Boost Interdisciplinary Research And Innovation

Rivers State University (RSU) has deployed an advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) research platform developed by MOC-LLC, United States, as part of efforts to strengthen scientific research, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and equip staff and students with practical skills in emerging technologies.

The initiative, unveiled on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at the Information and Communication Technology Centre (ICTC), includes the donation of a dedicated server by MOC-LLC to support the establishment of ML/AI research laboratories, hands-on scientific training and interdisciplinary research activities across the University.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the University's digitalisation drive. He noted that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning had become indispensable technologies that institutions must embrace to remain relevant and competitive in the rapidly evolving global environment.

Prof. Zeb-Obipi commended the resource person and donor, Dr Mfon Okpok, for his commitment to advancing research and technological development within the Nigerian university system. He observed that the practical approach adopted for the training would equip participants with relevant skills applicable to their respective disciplines. He therefore urged them to share the knowledge acquired with other members of the University community.

The Vice-Chancellor also emphasised that the University's digitalisation policy required staff to have access to appropriate computer systems to maximise the benefits of emerging technologies. In this regard, he disclosed that arrangements had been made to enable staff to acquire computers under three categories: Basic, Standard and Advanced, with flexible payment options to ensure affordability.

Earlier, the Director of ICTC, Prof. Sunny Orike, described the programme as an important opportunity for continuous learning and professional development. He observed that Artificial Intelligence had evolved beyond being merely a technological tool to becoming a strategic resource for enhancing productivity, improving efficiency and simplifying professional activities.

Prof. Orike welcomed the resource persons and participants, urging them to remain actively engaged throughout the training in order to acquire practical knowledge and competencies in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

In his remarks, Dr Mfon Okpok explained that the initiative was conceived to move the application of emerging technologies beyond theoretical discussions and into practical classroom experiences. He expressed optimism that the platform would strengthen research activities, stimulate innovation, facilitate prototype development and promote research outputs with potential for patent registration within the University.

He further underscored the need for properly structured research activities and the importance of equipping students with the requisite skills to undertake scientific investigations capable of attracting research grants and providing practical solutions to societal challenges.

Also speaking, the Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technology, University of Abuja, Prof. Emmanuel M. Eronu, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, expressed appreciation to the management of Rivers State University for providing the opportunity for inter-university collaboration.

Prof. Eronu also commended Dr Okpok for donating the Dell Edge Starboard, expressing optimism that the collaboration would yield tangible research outcomes and further strengthen technological development at the University of Abuja.

The deployment at Rivers State University follows the implementation of the same research platform at Hawassa University, Ethiopia, on October 16, 2026, while the University of Abuja is making preparations for a similar deployment.

Beyond its immediate benefits to the participating institutions, the initiative is expected to open new avenues for collaboration among Rivers State University, the University of Abuja and Hawassa University in areas such as joint research publications, research grant applications, postgraduate supervision, academic exchanges and international conferences.

The collaboration is expected to foster knowledge sharing, strengthen institutional research capacity and position the participating universities to make greater contributions to scientific advancement, technological innovation and sustainable development.
