SUG Honours Former VC Professor Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed, Launches Magazine On His Legacy At FUD

The Students' Union Government, SUG, of the Federal University Dutse, FUD, has honoured the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed, with the launch of a commemorative magazine in recognition of his outstanding leadership and immense contributions to the growth and development of the University.

The colourful event also featured the graduation ceremony of beneficiaries of the SUG Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition Programme. A total of 450 students were successfully trained in nine different vocational trades aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, innovation and self-reliance among students.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor of FUD, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel reaffirmed the University's commitment to entrepreneurship training and practical skills acquisition.

He disclosed that part of the Students' Union Government's funds had been dedicated to sustaining entrepreneurship training programmes. He praised the SUG leadership for supporting initiatives that directly benefit students.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that graduates must possess not only academic qualifications but practical skills that would make them employers of labour. He expressed confidence that the Centre would soon receive accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE. This, he said, would enable students to graduate with both academic degrees and recognised trade certifications.

In his welcome address, the SUG President, Comrade Isah Ibrahim described Professor Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed as a visionary leader whose administration transformed the University through academic excellence, infrastructural development and student-centred policies. He noted that the commemorative magazine was produced to preserve the former Vice-Chancellor's remarkable legacy and celebrate his years of dedicated service to the institution.

The SUG President also commended the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel, for sustaining the University's developmental strides through his student-friendly administration and commitment to entrepreneurship development.

He explained that the skills acquisition programme aligns with the Vice-Chancellor's 11-Point Agenda, particularly in equipping students with practical skills that will prepare them for life after graduation.

Earlier, the Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, CEED, Dr. Nasira Turawa Yola disclosed that the Centre had successfully trained 450 students across nine vocational trades. He described the programme as one of the most impactful student empowerment initiatives.

He further revealed that under the leadership of Professor Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, the University's water production unit has been fully revitalised and now supplies quality sachet water to the University community.

According to him, plans are at an advanced stage to commence bottled water production. He added that efforts are ongoing to secure accreditation from the NBTE and establish stronger collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund, ITF.

He noted that these developments would enable beneficiaries to obtain nationally recognised vocational certificates and further position the Centre as a leading entrepreneurship hub.

In his remarks, the former Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Dutse, Professor Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed expressed deep appreciation to the Students' Union Government for the honour. He described the commemorative magazine as a celebration of the collective achievements of the entire University community rather than of his person alone.

He acknowledged the invaluable support he received from principal officers, management, academic and non-academic staff throughout his tenure. He congratulated the incumbent Vice-Chancellor on the remarkable progress already recorded within a short period in office, and urged members of the University community to continue supporting the current administration in advancing the University's vision.

At the end of the event, the launch raised a total of 11.2 million naira, demonstrating overwhelming support for the initiative and deep appreciation for Professor Abdulkarim Sabo Mohammed's enduring legacy and contributions to the development of the Federal University Dutse.
