UAT Red Cross Seeks Partnership With University of Africa Toru Orua

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Bayelsa State Branch, has sought a stronger partnership with the University of Africa, Toru Orua (UAT) to expand humanitarian activities, volunteerism, and community development initiatives within the institution.

The Vice Chancellor of UAT, Professor Solomon Tamarabrakemi Ebobrah, reaffirmed the university's commitment to collaborating with humanitarian organizations while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Sagbama Division, during a courtesy visit to his office on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

Leading the delegation, the State Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Pastor Omu Paul, thanked the Vice Chancellor for receiving the team and introduced members of the delegation, including officials of the Sagbama Divisional Executive and the Bayelsa State Executive Council of the Society.

Speaking during the visit, the Sagbama Divisional Chairman, Mr. Igoni Progress, described the Nigerian Red Cross as an international humanitarian organization whose activities extend beyond first aid to disaster response, humanitarian interventions, health education, volunteer development, emergency preparedness, and community support programmes.

He noted that although the Society had previously submitted a strategic proposal to the university, its activities on campus had remained limited. He appealed for stronger institutional collaboration to improve the visibility and impact of the Red Cross within the university community.

Responding, Professor Ebobrah commended the Nigerian Red Cross Society for its humanitarian services and dedication to volunteerism.

He said the ideals of the Red Cross align closely with the university's vision of promoting "a culture of creative hard work, excellence, and responsible citizenship," adding that both institutions share a common goal of developing responsible individuals who contribute positively to society.

The Vice Chancellor encouraged the Society to deepen its engagement with students by creating meaningful volunteer opportunities that would channel their energy into productive activities and discourage involvement in social vices.

Professor Ebobrah also acknowledged the challenges facing the university as a young public institution, particularly inadequate infrastructure and limited office accommodation. While explaining that these constraints make it difficult to immediately allocate a dedicated office to the Society, he assured the delegation that the university remains open to collaboration and would provide every possible support within its available resources.

He further urged the Red Cross to leverage its international network, experience, and volunteer driven structure to establish a strong presence on campus through impactful programmes capable of attracting students and staff.

The Vice Chancellor also encouraged the Society to partner with the university on initiatives that advance the Sustainable Development Goals, promote humanitarian service, improve community health, and deliver meaningful interventions to surrounding communities.

According to him, organizations such as the Nigerian Red Cross have an important role in complementing the university's efforts to produce socially responsible graduates while contributing to community development.

Professor Ebobrah assured the delegation that UAT would continue to welcome partnerships that add value to the university community and its host communities.

The Nigerian Red Cross delegation was received by the Vice Chancellor alongside the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Japheth Bunakiye, and the Registrar, Mrs. Tare ela Darlington Abite.
