UDUS Holds Matriculation Ceremony for Newly Admitted Students

The management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) hosted its annual matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The event officially welcomed newly admitted students into the university’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Held at the University Convocation Theatre on the main campus, the ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashir Garba; Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Umar Aliyu; Chairman of the Students' Union, Comrade Nazir Yusuf; matriculating students; and other key members of the university community.
The event began with an opening prayer led by Mallam Sani Sahabi Bodinga, after which the procession was led by the University Chief Security Officer, Colonel Abdullahi Gwandu.
The Chairman of the Students' Union Caretaker Committee, Comrade Nazir Yusuf, a 500-level Law student, delivered an opening address. In his remarks, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the university management, particularly the Student Affairs Division, for their continued support. He also urged the new students to uphold the core values of the institution.
“Usmanu Danfodiyo University is a home to all students. Be exemplary students and worthy ambassadors of this great institution,” he said.
In his speech, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Umar Aliyu, emphasized the critical role of discipline and moral conduct within the university community.
“When it comes to discipline, Usmanu Danfodiyo University stands as a paragon. That’s why it is proudly recognized as the most peaceful university in Nigeria. The university awards certificates based on both character and learning,” he stated.
Professor Aliyu also encouraged the matriculants to remain law-abiding, strive for excellence, and steer clear of any form of misconduct. He particularly highlighted the efforts of the university’s Zero Tolerance for Corruption Club, which investigates, addresses reported cases and also serve as watch dog to promote a corrupt free university community.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashir Garba, also addressed the students, welcoming them warmly to the institution. He urged them to serve as good ambassadors of themselves, their parents, and the university. He advised them to familiarize themselves with the student handbook, which outlines the rules and expectations of the university.
“This matriculation oath signifies your official induction as students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto,” he noted.
Professor Garba further provided a brief historical overview of UDUS as a second-generation university and revealed that a total of 5,859 students had been admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to excellence, both in academics and in character development.
The ceremony concluded with a goodwill message from the Chairman of the occasion, Professor Ibrahim Yakasai of the Department of Hausa. He warmly welcomed the students and encouraged them to take full advantage of the academic and extracurricular opportunities available to them at the university.
“Remember, you are now part of a vibrant community that values excellence and innovation. Make the most of the resources at your disposal, and actively participate in both academic and extra curricular activities,” he advised.
The event concluded with a closing prayer led by Prof. Kamal Babikir, the Dean of the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies, followed by the recitation of the Nigerian National Anthem.
