UDUS Veterinary Medical Students’ Association Welcomes Freshers with Immersive Orientation Program

The Association of Veterinary Medical Students (AVMS), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), has organized an orientation programme for newly admitted 100-level students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. 

Organized under the administration of Ahmad Muhammad Bako, the AVMS CTC Chairman for the 2025/2026 academic session, the programme, held on Saturday, 24th January 2026, commenced in the early hours of the day with a guided tour for the fresh students across key veterinary facilities.

The students were first taken to the new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the permanent site, where they were exposed to various laboratories and the anatomy museum, giving them firsthand insight into the academic environment of their chosen profession. Thereafter, the students were taken to the abattoir, where they were introduced to the roles of veterinarians in meat inspection and public health. Facilities used for animal restraint and slaughter, as well as the different sections of the abattoir, were also explained to them.

Following the tour, the students were given time to rest before proceeding to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). At the VTH, they were taken round various units and laboratories to familiarize them with clinical and diagnostic services within the hospital.

The orientation proper later commenced with the presence of lecturers, including Dr A. M. Mayaki, Dr Adamu Umaru, and Dr Sidi Shehu. Delivering the keynote orientation lecture, Dr A. M. Mayaki gave an overview of the veterinary programme, highlighted career opportunities in the profession, and emphasized the importance of discipline and commitment among the newly admitted students. Other lecturers present also offered words of advice and encouragement to the students, urging them to remain focused and uphold good conduct throughout their academic journey.

A short quiz session was conducted based on activities and lessons from the programme, featuring male and female students, with the female students emerging winners. 

Speaking at the event, the Orientation Chairman, Shittu Basit Opeyemi, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the lecturers, student leaders, committee members, and all participants who contributed to the success of the programme.
