UNIDEL Emerges as Nigeria’s 3rd Best University for Sustainability

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL), Prof. Stella Chinye Chiemeke, has declared the sweeping digital transformation of the institution’s academic process as the crowning achievement of her tenure — a bold reform that has propelled the university to national prominence.

Addressing a Press Conference at the Council Chambers on February 18, 2026, ahead of the University’s maiden Convocation Ceremony slated for Saturday, February 21, Prof. Chiemeke reflected on a transformational five-year leadership that has redefined the young institution’s trajectory.

The Professor of Computer Science said UNIDEL’s full digitalization of academic operations had entrenched efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness.

“All Deans and Heads of Department are ICT-compliant. Our students are vigorously encouraged to embrace technology in every facet of their studies. Above all, our success story is anchored on absolute discipline — staff and students must follow laid-down rules,” she stated.

Under her stewardship since 2021, UNIDEL has expanded from 8 to 12 faculties and grown its academic programmes from 74 to 96 — all now fully accredited. What began as a fledgling state university has rapidly evolved into one of Nigeria’s most sought-after institution, driven by a culture of academic excellence and strict administrative discipline.

The numbers tell the story of rising confidence: at the 5th Matriculation for the 2025/2026 academic session, 7,173 students were admitted from a staggering 13,559 applicants.

This Saturday, 1,606 graduates drawn from the Faculties of Arts, Computing, Education, Environmental Sciences, Management Sciences, Sciences, and Social Sciences will convocate at a grand ceremony in the main campus.

In a major milestone that cements its national standing, UNIDEL was ranked the 3rd Best University in Nigeria for Sustainability in the 2025 edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings — a recognition of its commitment to environmental management and resource efficiency.

Prof. Chiemeke described the ranking as “a validation of hard work, innovation and vision,” adding that the institution had positioned itself as a leader in technology-driven education.

She expressed profound gratitude to the Delta State Government for establishing the university and to the Visitor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for unwavering support in funding, infrastructural development, staffing, welfare, and campus security.

She emphasized that salaries were paid promptly — a rarity in many public institutions — contributing to industrial harmony and uninterrupted academic calendars.

The historic press conference drew top university officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Ijeh; Registrar, Barr. Richmond Omagbemi; Bursar, Dr. Sunny Ikeogwu; Librarian, Dr. Mrs. Vera Okonoko; alongside Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, and many journalists from across the country.

As Prof. Chiemeke prepares to hand over the reins, she leaves behind more than just infrastructure and rankings — she leaves a digitally empowered institution, firmly planted on the path of excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
