UNILAG First-Class Graduate and Sickle Cell Advocate, Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, Passes Away
Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, a brilliant young woman who lived with sickle cell disease, has sadly passed away just one year after earning a First Class degree from the University of Lagos.
She graduated with a B.Sc. in Cell Biology and Genetics, finishing with an outstanding CGPA of 4.82/5.00. Despite the pain and challenges that often come with sickle cell, Anisa never allowed it to define or limit her dreams. Instead, she proved that strength, determination, and faith can carry someone through even the toughest battles.
In one of her X posts, she wrote:
“Who says having sickle cell disease is a barrier to academic excellence?
Definitely not me!
This is from the Grace of my Lord (27:40).”
Sadly, her sister shared that Anisa passed away and was laid to rest yesterday morning.
Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience, courage, and faith. Even in the face of a lifelong health challenge, she still rose to the top academically.
Throughout her journey, Anisa inspired many students living with sickle cell and other challenges, showing them that their dreams are valid and achievable.
Please say a prayer for her when you see this. May her soul rest in perfect peace. ????
