UNIMAID Pledges Support for Kanuri Language and Cultural Preservation

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, Professor Muhammed Laminu Mele, has reaffirmed the commitment of the University to support efforts aimed at preserving, promoting and sustaining Nigerian languages, cultures and traditional values.
Professor Mele stated this on Wednesday when he received a delegation from the Coalition of Kanuri Associations and Artists, led by its President, Alhaji Baba Gana Salisu, during a courtesy visit to his office.
He said the University and the coalition share several areas of common interest, particularly in the preservation and promotion of language and cultural heritage.
The Vice-Chancellor said the University is ready to collaborate with the coalition through the Department of Kanuri, the University Language Centre and the Centre for the Study and Promotion of Cultural Sustainability to advance the teaching, use and preservation of the Kanuri language and cultural values.
He also highlighted the potential for collaboration with the Department of Theatre Arts, noting that such partnership could facilitate the production of high-quality dramatic works in Kanuri language and further contribute to the promotion of the culture.
Professor Mele thanked the delegation for the visit and assured them of the University's willingness to support initiatives that align with its mandate of promoting knowledge, culture and societal development.
Earlier, the President of the Coalition, Alhaji Baba Gana Salisu, said the coalition brings together about 27 Kanuri associations and artists groups united by the common objective of promoting and sustaining the culture, language and values of the Kanuri people.
Alhaji Salisu explained that the visit was to formally identify with the University management and seek its support and partnership in advancing the objectives of the coalition.
He described UNIMAID as a centre of excellence with a vital role to play in the preservation and promotion of the region's cultural heritage.
