UNIMAID SUG Mobilises Large-Scale Sanitation Drive to Overhaul Hostel Hygiene
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Maiduguri has launched a high-impact environmental intervention, executing a large-scale sanitation exercise across the institution’s residential halls to improve living conditions and safeguard student health.
The initiative, which unfolded on Sunday, April 12, 2026, was orchestrated under the leadership of the SUG President, Aliyu Idriss Dakasku (D.K), in a strategic partnership with the Executive Council and the Students’ Representative Assembly (SRA).
The exercise marks one of the most comprehensive student-led welfare programs of the current academic session, aimed at fostering a culture of cleanliness and dignity within the campus community.

The sanitation drive followed a systematic route through the university’s most populated residential blocks.
Commencing at the New Male A Hostel, the mobilization moved through the Ali Monguno Female Hostel and the Aisha Buhari Female Hostel, before extending to the E-Block, Titanic Male Hostel, New Male B Hostel, and finally concluding at the B-Block Hostel to ensure both male and female student populations benefited from the immediate physical cleanup and the subsequent distribution of hygiene resources.
Recognizing that long-term environmental maintenance requires more than a single day of action, the Aliyu Idriss Dakasku-led administration integrated a robust logistical support component into the exercise.
Student residents were provided with essential cleaning kits comprising brooms, mops, waste bins, and liquid detergents.
To address specific public health concerns, the Union prioritized the disinfection of shared facilities, distributing quantities of Izal and other germicidal agents to ensure that hostel toilets and common areas meet rigorous hygienic standards.
In a formal briefing following the exercise, the SUG Public Relations Officer, Umar Adamu, speaking on behalf of the President, described the initiative as a reflection of the Union's "visionary and proactive" mandate.
He emphasized that leadership views a clean environment not merely as an aesthetic preference but as a fundamental necessity for academic success and student dignity.
The statement noted that the drive was specifically designed to create a "conducive atmosphere where students can live, learn, and thrive in good health.
The success of the intervention was further attributed to the collaborative relationship between the student body and the university’s governing authorities.
The SUG leadership expressed its profound appreciation to the University Management, stating that their steadfast support and cooperation were instrumental in navigating the logistics of such a large-scale campus-wide operation.
As the 2025/2026 academic session progresses, the SUG has issued an appeal to the entire student population to view this exercise as a starting point rather than a conclusion.
The Union’s leadership stressed that the preservation of a hygienic and orderly living space is a collective responsibility that requires daily commitment from every resident.
