UNIOSUN Mourns Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, Foundation Scholar and Provost of Postgraduate College
The Osun State University (UNIOSUN) community has been plunged into mourning following the sudden passing of Professor Siyan Abdulgafar Oyeweso, the Provost of the Postgraduate College and one of the university’s most distinguished foundation scholars.
Professor Oyeweso passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, December 2, 2025, after a brief illness. The university's management described his death as a "monumental loss" to the institution, the academic community, and the nation at large.
In a mark of respect for the revered historian, administrator, and intellectual giant, UNIOSUN announced the closure of all academic and administrative activities across its campuses by noon on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Speaking on behalf of the university, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, acknowledged Professor Oyeweso’s indelible contributions to the institution's development and national discourse.
“Osun State University is deeply pained by the sudden departure of Professor Siyan Oyeweso. He was not only a pillar of our academic structure but also a mentor, a builder, and a shining example of scholarly excellence,” Professor Adebooye stated.
The Vice-Chancellor extended heartfelt condolences to the Oyeweso family, colleagues, and associates, praying for comfort and strength during this difficult period.
Professor Siyan Oyeweso was a highly accomplished Professor of History with a career spanning nearly four decades in Nigerian academia.
He began his academic journey at the Lagos State University (LASU) in 1985, rising to the rank of Professor by 2004. He served in various capacities at LASU, including Head of Department and Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
His extensive research focused on Nigerian history, with expertise in areas such as Cultural History, Nigerian Civil War Studies, Yoruba Inter-state Warfare, and Nigeria’s Intellectual History. He authored numerous books and publications that significantly enriched scholarship and public service.
Professor Oyeweso was laid to rest later on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, in his hometown of Ede, Osun State.
