The University of Ibadan (UI) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned African linguist and Foundation President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Emeritus Prof. Ayo Bamgbose, NNOM, FNAL, D.Litt., who died at the age of 94.
The University described Prof. Bamgbose as a distinguished scholar who made immense contributions to academia and Nigeria's intellectual development throughout his illustrious career.
Emeritus Prof. Bamgbose served the University of Ibadan with distinction and was Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1971 to 1973. He was widely respected for his pioneering work in African linguistics and his enduring impact on language studies on the continent.
On behalf of the University community, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale, commiserated with the late scholar's family, friends, colleagues, and the wider intellectual community, describing his passing as a great loss to the academic world.
