University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, has urged the 2024 first-degree graduands to harness their knowledge and experiences to innovate, navigate challenges, and lead in shaping the world.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, fspsp, FAS, has urged the 2024 first-degree graduands to harness their knowledge and experiences to innovate, navigate challenges, and lead in shaping the world.

Speaking during the first day of UI’s 2024 Convocation ceremonies, which saw graduands from the Faculties of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Law, Public Health, Dentistry, and Economics and Management Sciences admitted to their degrees, Professor Adebowale reminded them that education is merely the foundation for lifelong learning.

“The world needs your talents, passion, and unique perspectives,” he said. “Carry confidence, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive impact.”

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted UI’s legacy as a 76-year-old institution consistently ranked among the world’s prestigious universities. He praised its alumni, staff, and students for their global contributions to science, medicine, agriculture, business, and technology. Despite challenges such as funding constraints and inconsistent policies, UI remains steadfast in producing globally competitive graduates.

Professor Adebowale also advised the graduands to stay curious and adaptable, urging them to maintain lifelong connections with their alma mater as part of a global alumni network.

The ceremony’s Commencement Speaker, Mr. Kehinde Olamide Ogunwumiju, OFR, SAN, FCI Arb (UK), and Managing Partner of Afe Babalola & Co., delivered an inspiring speech titled “Gratitude: The Compass for a Life of Impact and Purpose.” An alumnus of UI, Ogunwumiju encouraged the graduands to embrace gratitude as a guiding principle.

“Gratitude illuminates your path, clarifies your purpose, and enriches your relationships,” Ogunwumiju said, emphasizing humility and politeness as hallmarks of promising young professionals.

He urged the graduands to celebrate their achievements while appreciating their support system, including the university staff, parents, guardians, and sponsors, whose guidance and encouragement shaped their journeys.

Prizes and awards were presented to the best graduating students and other exceptional achievers, marking the culmination of years of hard work and excellence at Nigeria’s premier university.
