The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has issued a formal warning to members of the university community over the heightened risk of fire outbreaks during the dry season and the yuletide period.
The warning was conveyed in an internal memorandum released by the Office of the Registrar on December 17, 2025, following a directive from the Vice-Chancellor. The notice cautioned staff and other members of the university community to strictly observe approved fire precautionary measures, particularly during the Christmas break when many offices and facilities may be left unattended.
According to the memorandum, all buildings and electrical installations within the university environment must be cleared of surrounding bushes to reduce fire hazards. The university also prohibited the burning of refuse heaps near buildings, noting that dry waste materials are highly combustible during the dry season.

Management further directed that all electrical appliances and devices should be switched off when not in use. Any faulty wiring, flickering lights, sparks, or unusual smells from electrical installations are to be reported immediately to the Safety Unit or the Works Department for prompt intervention.
The memo also reminded staff that fire extinguishers provided in offices and buildings should be deployed where necessary to contain minor fire outbreaks before they escalate.
The university emphasized that the directive is mandatory and requires total compliance in the interest of safety, protection of lives, and preservation of university property.
The memorandum was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke, on behalf of the university management.
