Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has recorded a 100 per cent pass rate in the final professional examinations of the pioneer set of its Medical Laboratory Science programme, with all 35 students successfully completing the examinations.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for the university as the pioneer students conclude the academic and professional examination requirements for entry into the medical laboratory science profession, subject to the applicable certification and registration processes.
Representatives of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) arrived at the university on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, ahead of the examinations conducted on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The successful outcome represents the culmination of years of academic lectures, practical training, assessments and personal sacrifices by the 35 students. As the first cohort of the department, their completion of the programme without delay also establishes a foundation for subsequent students.
The achievement reflects the efforts of the department’s founding leadership, particularly Professor M. N. Orji, Dean of the Faculty, and Professor Chinelo Umedum, who initiated the programme and helped establish the academic foundation on which the pioneer students completed their training.

The current Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Dr. Stella Afulukwe, expressed satisfaction with the students’ performance, attributing their success to their hard work, determination and commitment.
She also acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of departmental staff in providing the students with the necessary training. Afulukwe further recognised the support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, in advancing the department.
The achievement adds to the university’s milestones under Omenugha’s administration, which emphasises the institution’s three core values of Values, Viability and Visibility.
The timely completion of the programme and the pioneer cohort’s 100 per cent success in the final professional examinations highlight the role of institutional support, academic leadership and effective programme delivery in preparing students for professional practice.
For the 35 graduates, the examinations mark the end of a significant academic chapter and the beginning of their professional journey. Their achievement also establishes a precedent for future cohorts of the university’s Medical Laboratory Science programme.
The milestone reflects the combined efforts of the department’s founding leadership, current management, academic staff, students and the university administration in developing the programme.

The successful outcome positions the pioneer cohort as the first group to complete COOU’s Medical Laboratory Science programme, subject to the remaining professional certification and registration requirements.
