Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has commenced a two-month intensive Google Mapping Training Programme aimed at equipping participants with practical digital mapping and geospatial skills.

The initiative, organized by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in partnership with Dezachi Oil & Gas Company Nigeria Limited and Bruce Integrated Nigeria Limited, began on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the MICTU Software Factory of the University.

The programme focuses on enhancing technical capacity in field data collection, GIS mapping, geolocation accuracy, and digital mapping using Google platforms, preparing participants for real-world mapping projects across diverse sectors.

Speaking on behalf of the Director of the Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), Mr. Sebastian Udeh, Head of the MICTU Software Factory, praised UNIZIK for providing an enabling environment and noted that the training is open to both students and non-students.

The Training Director and Coordinator of Google Maps in Anambra State, Mr. Sam Eyo, revealed that 22 students will participate in the programme and receive a stipend of ₦150,000 each, gaining hands-on experience in map validation, editing, and submission of outputs.

Students’ Union President, Comrade Samuel Ochuba, described the programme as timely and encouraged participants to leverage the opportunity to strengthen their digital and technical competencies.

The training underscores UNIZIK’s commitment to digital innovation and capacity building, positioning students for emerging opportunities in the geospatial and technology-driven workforce.
