Professor Fawehinmi, a distinguished scholar of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology, formally assumed duty as the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor in December 2025, succeeding the acting leadership of Professor Mathew Adamu. His early tenure has been marked by a "leadership without filters" approach, frequently moving out of the central administration office to engage with various faculties and institutes.

The university, which was renamed in February 2026 to honour former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, continues its first-semester examinations with a focus on administrative stability and academic rigor.
