Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has tasked the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) to produce over 10 million eggs per week for Nigerian markets.
This directive was given during a courtesy visit by NAPRI's Executive Director, Prof. Mohammed Rabiu Hassan, and his management team to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
The Minister commended NAPRI and Ahmadu Bello University for their efforts in research, teaching, and development, despite challenges. He encouraged NAPRI to strengthen its collaborations with key actors in the livestock value chain, such as the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) and ARLA, an international dairy company.
Maiha emphasized the need for production of old-day chicks of Shika Brown and pasture seeds, highlighting NAPRI's role in capacity building, training, and quality pasture seeds production. He noted that the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has opened a new frontier for livestock production in Nigeria.
The Minister also revealed that the new Ministry has approached over 12 state governors for 5,000 hectares of land for pasture development to address farmer-herder clashes due to feed scarcity. The NAPRI team, led by Prof. Hassan, comprised other top officials, including Deputy Director Dr. Muhammad Sa’idu Tanko and Programme Leader, Poultry Research, Dr. Idris Abdullahi.
