ABU’s Prof. Sule elected President of Archaeological Association of Nigeria

The Archaeological Association of Nigeria (AAN) has elected new national executive members with Prof. Abubakar Sule Sani as its President to run the professional body for the next two years.

The association’s new national executive members emerged during the 2024 Archaeological Association of Nigeria Conference held at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 10th – 13th March, 2024.

Prof. Sule, who teaches at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was elected alongside six others from other Nigerian universities.

The others are Dr. Orijeme Akpo Emuobosa, University of Ibadan, Vice President; Mr. Oyinlola Yinka Olanrewaju, Ahmadu Bello University, Secretary; Mr. Babangida Muhammed, Ahmadu Bello University, Assistant Secretary I; Mr. Joel Ibrahim, Federal University, Lokoja, Assistant Secretary II; Ms. Tabitha Nyey, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Financial Secretary; and Dr. Abubakar A. Mohammed, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Treasurer.

Also, AAN issued a Communiqué at the close of the Conference which the association decried the current insecurity that is “seriously affecting archaeological and heritage practice in Nigeria.”

To address the situation, the Conference called for a critical evaluation of its research methodologies that identify field methods in order to ensure the safety of researchers and heritage practitioners.

Prof. Sule, who is the Vice President of International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS ) and Member of Society for Africanist Archaeologists (SAFA), was Head of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Ahmadu Bello University from 2017 to 2021.

Sule, who is a Professor of African Archaeology, was also Deputy Director, Centre for Historical Documentation and Research, Arewa House, Ahmadu Bello University from 2017 to 2021.

Prof. Sule is currently the Deputy Director, Institute for Development Research and Training (IDR&T), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He is also the Editor-In-Chief, Zaria Archaeology Papers (ZAP), a journal of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Ahmadu Bello University; and a Member, Academic Planning Committee, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
