Day 1 of the 11th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) football tournament saw strong performances from African teams, as they aimed to make a statement on Nigerian soil. In Group A, Kenyatta University (KE) played out a thrilling 1-1 draw against Lagos State University (LASU), while the University of Ghana (GH) held Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) to a 0-0 stalemate.

Group B action witnessed a 1-0 victory for the University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana, over the University of Lagos (UNILAG), leaving the host team disappointed. Nkumba University (UG) of Uganda also dominated their match, defeating the University of Jos (UNIJOS) 2-0.
