ASUP drags Federal Polytechnic, Ede to Industrial Court over rector’s appointment

The incorporated trustees of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics have dragged the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, and the Federal Ministry of Education before the National Industrial Court to demand an end to the process of appointing a new rector for the institution.

ASUP, in suit number: NICN/OS/04/2022, asked the court to halt the selection process pending the hearing and determination of its originating summons.

In an affidavit in support of the originating summons sworn to by the ASUP Chairman, Federal Polytechnic, Ede branch, Mr Azeez Olukayode, observed that the Federal Polytechnic Act, 2019, stipulated that persons who might apply for the post of the Rector must be a Chief Lecturer in the polytechnic sector with at least five years experience in that position, among other criteria. Olukayode said the institution’s Governing Council had in an advertisement for applications for the post of Rector of the polytechnic made it mandatory that anyone applying must possess a doctoral degree.
