DSP Calls For Consolidation Of Democracy, Lauds NSUK For Establishing Institute Of Legislative And Democratic Studies

 

The Deputy Senate President of the National Assembly, Distinguished Senator Barau Jibrin has called for the consolidation of democratic tenets through the establishment of institutes that encourage the practice of democratic principles to checkmate the rising cases of coups in Africa.

Senator Barau made the call on Tuesday 19th December 2023 when the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi led principal officers and management staff of the Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies on a courtesy call to his office at the National Assembly Complex.

Senator Barau who commended the University for establishing the Institute decried the lack of research institutes in such disciplines noting that the establishment of such institutes will provide quality scholarship to the legislative arm of government and also provide research opportunities that will further strengthen and add value to law-making not only in Nigeria but in Africa which will prevent the incessant urge for power takeover through undemocratic means.

He also used the platform to congratulate the pioneer Director of the Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies and the former Clerk of the National Assembly, Dr. Salisu Maikasuwa describing him as a seasoned administrator who will use his wealth of experience to give the newly established institute the drive and focus it needs to deliver on its mandate.

In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed congratulated Senator Barau on his election as the Deputy Senate President of the National Assembly noting that he is one of the finest lawmakers in Nigeria going through his antecedents from the green chamber to the red chamber.

 

Professor Suleiman further informed the Deputy Senate President that the Institute was established with the sole aim of providing knowledge to parliamentarians in the art of law-making and sustenance of democratic principles through full-time and part-time postgraduate academic programs which is why the University is seeking synergy with the National Assembly.

The Vice-Chancellor also used the platform to request the Deputy Senate President to deliver the first public lecture of the Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies a request he gladly accepted.

 

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the University souvenir to Distinguished Senator Barau Jibrin.

 

On the University delegation for the courtesy visit were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic, Professor Abdullahi Modibbo, the Registrar Mallam Bala Isyaka Ahmed II, the Bursar, Mallam Murtala Abubakar Kana, the University Librarian, Dr. Aliyu Abdulkadir, the Director of the Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Dr. Salisu Maikasuwa, the Deputy Director of the Institute, Dr. Bello Baban Umma and the Director of Physical Facilities, Engr. Ahmed Liman.
