The Federal University Otuoke (FUO) has been urged to establish a degree programme in Health Information Management (HIM) as part of its academic expansion drive.
The call was made by the Registrar of the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN), Comrade Babagana Mustafa, during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Teddy Charles Adias, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Mustafa, who led a joint delegation of the HRORBN and the Association of Health Records and Information Management Practitioners of Nigeria (AHRIMPN), explained that the board is a statutory body recognised under Nigerian law with the mandate of regulating training, practice, and standards in health records and information management. He stressed that introducing the programme in FUO would not only raise the profile of the profession but also tackle the growing demand for skilled health information managers in the country’s healthcare system.

Responding, Professor Adias welcomed the proposal and assured the delegation of the university’s readiness to explore collaborative opportunities. He noted that the initiative was in line with FUO’s vision of addressing manpower shortages in critical sectors through innovative academic programmes.
The meeting ended with optimism from both sides that the discussions would pave the way for the institutionalisation of Health Information Management as a degree programme in the university.
