FUNAAB Guides Fresh Students on Career Pathways, Academic Excellence

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has sensitised its newly admitted students on academic expectations, career opportunities and the importance of developing the knowledge, skills and character needed for a successful university experience and future career.

The Career Sensitisation Day, held on September 23, 2026, at the Prof. Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building, provided fresh students with practical guidance on navigating their academic journey and taking advantage of opportunities available within and outside the University.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Olusegun Idowu, urged the students to pursue academic excellence while developing good character.

The Vice-Chancellor, through his representative, stressed that success at the University should go beyond academic grades.

He advised the students to respect their lecturers and fellow students and approach their studies with discipline, responsibility and a positive attitude.

He noted that the values students develop during their university years would play an important role in shaping their future lives and careers.

Earlier, in his Welcome Address, the Head of the Career Services and Linkages Unit (CSLU), Professor Elijah Obayelu, said the Unit was committed to exposing students to career opportunities and equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to prepare effectively for life after graduation.

Obayelu emphasised that a student’s professional journey begins from the moment of admission rather than after graduation.

He therefore encouraged the students to start preparing early, remain resilient and hardworking, and take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the University.

He urged them to develop relevant skills, pursue their passions, believe in themselves and remain disciplined, noting that these attributes would contribute significantly to their future professional success.

The programme featured presentations by the Deans of various Colleges, who introduced the students to the academic programmes, opportunities and career pathways available within their respective Colleges.

The Deans also encouraged the students to begin making informed decisions about their future from the early stages of their university education.

Also speaking at the event, a representative of the Aspire Trybe Youth Foundation, led by Mr. Alex Adekunle, challenged the students to identify, develop and maximise opportunities that could help them discover their talents and potential.

The Foundation introduced its five areas of development, namely Discovery, Development, Connect, Build and Impact.

The five areas focus on identifying personal abilities, developing relevant competencies, building meaningful relationships and deploying acquired skills and talents to create positive impact.

The Career Sensitisation Day provided the newly admitted students with valuable orientation as they commenced their academic journey at FUNAAB.

The programme also reinforced the University’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also skilled, innovative, responsible and prepared for meaningful careers and responsible citizenship.
