FUNAAB Staff School Trains Teachers on Effective Classroom Management for 21st Century Learners

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Staff School on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, held its annual workshop for the 2026/2027 Academic Session, with emphasis on equipping teachers with contemporary classroom management strategies for effective teaching and learning.

The workshop, themed “Effective Classroom Management and Techniques for 21st Century Learners,” brought together members of the University community and education stakeholders, including the Chairman, FUNAAB Schools Management Board and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olusegun Idowu, who was represented by the Director, Directorate of Academic Information Systems (DACIS), Prof. Olusegun Folorunso; former Acting Registrar, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Dawodu; and Dr. Chiemeka Njoku.

Welcoming participants to the workshop, the Headteacher of the Staff School, Mrs. Florence Alade, said the theme was carefully selected in view of the changing dynamics of contemporary classrooms and the emergence of learners as digital natives.

She noted that the curiosity and evolving learning patterns of present-day pupils required teaching approaches that went beyond the conventional chalk-and-talk method.

According to her, the workshop was designed to equip teachers with modern strategies for creating engaging, disciplined and learner-centred classrooms that promote academic excellence and character development.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Idowu underscored the importance of effective classroom management and appropriate communication strategies in disseminating knowledge in modern classrooms.

He commended the teachers for their dedication and relentless efforts towards sustaining and improving the academic standards of the Staff School, urging them to continue embracing innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Delivering the first lecture, Mrs. Dawodu spoke on “Principles of Management and Work Ethics as They Affect the Teaching Profession.”

She highlighted essential managerial qualities and professional work ethics required to enhance productivity and effectiveness in technology-driven classrooms, particularly in the interaction between teachers and pupils.

Speaking on attendance management, Mr. Saburi Sanusi emphasised the importance of maintaining accurate attendance records, noting that the school would henceforth adopt a digital system for marking pupils’ attendance.

The third lecture, titled “Effective Classroom Management,” was delivered by Dr. Njoku.

He advocated the use of innovative and participatory teaching approaches, including gamification, to enhance learners’ engagement and generate productive feedback.

Dr. Njoku further encouraged teachers to adopt modern teaching methods that promote active participation and respond to the needs of learners in today’s increasingly digital-oriented classroom.

The workshop provided an avenue for teachers to enhance their professional knowledge and acquire practical strategies for managing contemporary classrooms while fostering effective learning, discipline and positive character development among pupils.
