FUTH Lafia organized a presentation today to commemorate World Glaucoma Week themed, “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.”
Declaring the event open, the Chief Medical Director, Dr Hassan Ikrama, commended the Ophthalmology Department for organizing the awareness activity and encouraged them to sustain efforts in promoting eye health.
In his presentation, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Okpanaki stressed the importance of regular eye examinations, noting that glaucoma can silently damage vision if not detected early. He added that people aged 40 and above and those with a family history are at higher risk.
Also speaking, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Dr Aboje O. Aboje, a Consultant Ophthalmologist explained that glaucoma can be hereditary and further stressed that early detection and proper treatment are key to preventing avoidable blindness.
The department of Ophthalmology encouraged every staff to visit the Eye Clinic for a glaucoma screening, stressing that awareness and regular eye check is key as glaucoma is avoidable.
