Gombe State University Faculty of Law Hosts Maiden International Conference on Law

The Faculty of Law, Gombe State University, has held the opening ceremony of its maiden International Conference on Law with the theme: “Law, Society, and Sustainable Development: Emerging Issues in Environmental and Energy Governance.”

The event, which took place at the Haruna Kadir Rasheed Hall, was declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of Gombe State University, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor commended the Faculty of Law for organizing what he described as a timely and intellectually engaging conference. He noted that the theme reflects pressing global concerns surrounding environmental protection, energy governance, and sustainable development, emphasizing the critical role of legal frameworks in addressing these challenges.

While welcoming dignitaries and participants, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Farida A. Kera, expressed delight at the successful organization of the conference. She highlighted the impressive participation of scholars, legal practitioners, and participants from across the globe, describing the conference as a significant milestone in the academic growth and international visibility of the Faculty.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Yakubu Philemon, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), also expressed satisfaction with the choice of theme, noting its relevance to contemporary legal practice and policy formulation. He underscored the importance of strengthening environmental and energy governance through robust legal mechanisms to ensure sustainable development.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Muhammad Tawfiq Ladan gave a concise and insightful presentation on the conference theme, examining emerging legal issues in environmental protection and energy regulation. He called for stronger institutional frameworks and collaborative efforts between governments, academia, and industry stakeholders to promote sustainable development goals.

The event was attended by the Grand Khadi of Gombe State, Khadi Abdullahi Usman Maikano; the State Solicitor-General, who represented the Commissioner for Justice; and the Vice-Chancellor of North Eastern University, Professor Yusuf Amuda Yahaya. Also present were the University Librarian, Dr. Henry Maina Abareh; distinguished professors; members of the Faculty of Law; invited guests; and students.

The conference marks a significant step by the Faculty of Law in fostering scholarly discourse on the intersection of law, society, and sustainable development, particularly in the critical areas of environmental and energy governance.
